High schools usually take a lot of pride in two teams: football and basketball teams. Right now, the McCaskey Tornadoes are tied for first place for basketball and hope to continue their win streak. Not only is the varsity team important, but the junior varsity team plays a big role too. In the next few years, the players from junior varsity will be leading the varsity team to victory.
The varsity rosters consist of one freshmen, two sophomores, seven juniors, and six seniors. These are all the varsity players: Elijah Terry, John Bryd, Isiah Thomas, Kevin Polite, Da’vion Scarborough, Hassan Williams, Irving Gonzalez, Makai, Ortiz-Gray, Sam Hershey, J’nai Hunter, Carter Gingerich, Miseal Gonzalez, Kevin Bell, Samir Gordon, and Jayon Burnside. One of the most important parts is the coach, Freddy Ramos. This is Coach Ramos’ second year coaching basketball at McCaskey, and a lot of people would say he is doing a pretty good job. The team is currently 11-4, and hope to keep that winning record. The team averages 68 points a game. The team has also scored a total of 1031 points so far this year.
On top, with the most points this season is Elijah Terry with 303 points. He has played in a total of 15 games and averages a total of 20 points a game. Terry has also hit 1,000 points this season. His agility and speed plays a big part in how many points he scores a game. I had a chance to talk to Carter Gingerich about how he thinks the season has gone so far the team. Carter Gingerich responded with, “ So far so good. A lot of ups and downs, but we are working.” I also asked Carter a question about the team’s main goal for the end of the season and where he wants the team to be at the end of the season. He responded with, “ Honestly, our main goal right now is to win all out and create a path for younger players that are coming up behind us.” And of course when he is talking about younger players he is talking about junior varsity and freshmen.
The junior varsity team is for the young, developing players that are going to be on varsity next year. Every player on the team is a sophomore and the roster consists of 12 players: Grady Bachman, Dinzey Feliz, Hasan Williams, J’nai Hunter, Keyon Stewart, Kasir Taylor, Angel Feliz, Shamell Burke, Kevin Bell, Jyzel Rice, Thomas Foster, and Javonzee Washington. The coach for junior varsity is Reggie Watson. The team’s record is 12-2, and they average 62 points a game. The teams total points on the season is 881. Hassan Williams is the player with the highest average points scored per game, which is 17 points. Hassan has also scored 247 points so far this season. The JV team in all though has scored 881 points. We will hope the junior varsity team keeps up their good work.
Hopefully both teams will keep playing well and win many more games to be able to go to the playoffs. The basketball team has the talent, it is just a matter of working together. Good luck to the McCaskey team. We all wish you the best of luck.
