Celebrating the Red Tornado: highlights from Spirit Week and Homecoming

By Jociel Colon

McCaskey’s first full week of October can only be described as soulful, romantic, and unique. Spirit week and Homecoming has come once again for the year, so how did our students go about the week?

To start the week, students didn’t need to change out of their clothes in the morning, as Monday was pajama day. Students and teachers alike couldn’t help but get colorful in their PJs. The fun didn’t end there.

Tuesday was twin and dynamic duo day. Lots of students had fun with it. We saw matching clothes, colors, and even pop culture characters. But this was definitely not the end of our school’s creativity this week.

On Wednesday, everyone was doing their best Killa Cam impression on Pink Day. We saw the student body dressed head to toe in pink, and that isn’t an understatement. Some pink wigs were passing through those halls.

Nearing the end of our week before Friday’s pep rally, our students got very creative. Thursday brings us to Bring Anything but a Backpack Day. And, this was arguably the most creative day of the week. Some students didn’t even bring things to contain their school supplies. There were entire lockers being carried, as well as car bumpers, coolers, and entire inflatable boats. You name it, a student probably brought it.

Deaglan Benson brought an inflatable boat to Anything But a Backpack Day on Thursday.

Now, this brought us to Friday and McCaskey’s pep rally. The entire school showcased their McCaskey pride, wearing the bold signature black and red colors. On top of this, our Homecoming Court was introduced to us. Later on that night in the McCaskey Tornadoes homecoming football game, it was announced that The Vidette‘s very own Kordell Booth won homecoming king! Right along with him, Gigi Castro won homecoming queen.

Saturday’s Homecoming inside the downtown Marriott helped top everything off. There was no shortage of fashion-show-esque outfits, romance, dancing, and crowd surfing, no joke. And if you were in the middle of that dance circle, you’ve definitely seen all of it.

Students had two days to rest from the busy but eventful week, with Indigenous People’s Day giving an extra day of leisure.

With the help of McCaskeys creative staff and students, this year’s spirit week definitely gave us some things to remember, and things to stuff the yearbook with. Ending with Saturday night’s Homecoming Dance, our annual spirit week has shown us all sorts of personalities and characters that will stay with us for years to come.
