We normally see school clubs as programs created for everyone to find their place. They can find out what interests them and meet new people with the same interests, but there’s more beyond that. According to an article by St. Johnsbury Academy, getting involved in more clubs or sports could get you into a more prestigious college, or could increase your options to choose from. Colleges use the information of your transcript and extracurriculars to look for your personality and the type of student you are.
According to this article from College Board, colleges would rather take a student with more extracurricular activities and involvement in the school than just an A student. College admission officers have said they are looking for people with more extracurricular activities because it shows their interests and personalities, shows the school spirit, and shows how much passion a student has towards something. Getting involved means having a wider selection and better schools wanting you to join them. This makes it easier as you always have a back-up plan. Extracurriculars can also make you stand out during scholarship applications, making colleges cheaper for you.
Getting involved also creates good habits for education beyond high school. Based on insights from this recent PrepScholar article, you are more likely to have more consistent attendance, academic achievements, and more likely to get into college. The report also states that participants in extracurricular activities are more likely to have no unexcused absences, never skipped class, higher than 3.0 GPA, and are more expected to get a bachelor or higher degree after in college. The reports are telling us that it’s going to help you academically as you won’t miss school as often, get your grades up, get you ready for college, and have a better work ethic.
