New inductees welcomed into McCaskey’s National Honor Society

By Nakaylah Kelley

McCaskey has officially conducted their induction for the National Honor Society on December 5th 2024. Congratulations to the inductees.

But maybe you’re wondering what exactly is the National Honor Society?

The National Honor Society is an organization that recognizes the academic and extracurricular achievements of its members. The organization prides itself on the 4 pillars that define what the NHS is all about: Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service.

Each member of NHS has displayed these qualities throughout their high school career. Students from 10th, 11th, or 12th grade are considered eligible as long as they have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.5 then after they have met that requirement they apply for NHS. The students are given an application to fill out, and afterward the faculty (Mr. Benjamin Deardorff and Mr. Carlos Cruz) carefully select new members. After being selected, an induction is planned for the new members to officially become a part of the organization. Each inductee selected a tribute to pin them during the ceremony. The tribute’s name is read aloud along with a heartfelt message from the inductee.

NHS is similar to any club we have here. We have our President Sophia Thompson, Vice President Lauren Snell, Historian Erminia Brigatti, Treasurer Oscar Richardson, Secretary Aspen Blessing-Hartley and Parliamentarian Serena Kim.

The National Honor Society members hold events and volunteer at school and outside of school. A member of this program must fulfill 15 hours of community service and fill out a log in the school year they became members. They must also uphold the same standards that got them accepted or better.

Being a member of NHS allows the student to be able to apply for the NHS scholarship, access NHS only college tools, looks good on job resumes, and you gain skills such as leadership, organization, planning, time management etc.

So keep those grades up so if you’re interested you can join the NHS- any junior with a 3.5 unweighted GPA will receive the invitation to apply, but a NHS candidate will need to prove their merit both in school and out to be accepted.
