McCaskey’s Fall Production of Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors

By Eleni King Martin

Along with the excitement of fall sports and the start of the new school year, the fall play is rapidly
approaching! Our very own theater department is getting ready to perform a hilarious retelling of the
classic, spooky tale of Dracula.

Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors is a combination of the tale of Dracula and the humor of classic comedies.
It follows the story of Lucy Westfeldt (Kathryn Smith) and her fiance, Jonathan Harker (Van Rainer)
trying to cure her sister Mina (Kiara Johnson) of a mysterious disease. This investigation eventually leads
to a hunt for the dangerous Count Dracula (Elias Anderson).

Mr. McMorrow, the director of the fall play, also known for teaching the cosmetology class, nn the
play perfectly in just one word: eclectic. He says, “I would say that it is completely outrageous, radical,
fun, funny…it’s farce, it’s fun, it’s not meant to be taken seriously.”

“The play overall is about Dracula and his relationship with others and not himself…it’s him learning
how to be with others and it’s about Lucy and Harker finding true love in each other and Dracula.” says
production stage manager Olivia Houde (check out our student feature on her!)

The female lead, Lucy Westfeldt, is described as being smart, energetic, and adventurous, and is played
by Kathryn Smith (grade 11). Stage manager Zayd Mattar says that Kathryn “plays the role perfectly.”
Jonathan Harker is 1 of the 2 male leads, and is a high-class, proper individual. He is played by Van
Rainer (grade 10). Production stage manager Olivia Houde says that Van’s acting style compliments that
of the other actors, creating a “natural chemistry between them.”

The last lead is, of course, Count Dracula. In this rendition, Dracula keeps his spooky demeanor but is
hugely narcissistic. Dracula is played by Elias Anderson (grade 11). Stage manager Zayd Mattar says that
Elias “embodies the character of Dracula in a very natural way.”

Come support our fall play! Opening night is November 20, in the East auditorium. The following show
dates are November 21-22. Each evening show starts at 7 o’clock. The closing show is a matinee
performance at 2 o’clock on November 23. Order your tickets today!
