Recently schools all over the country have been using YONDER pouches to prevent
students from using their phones. As many administrations believe that this is a way to reduce
phone use, others disagree. As far as McCaskey goes, views vary.
Students in McCaskey overall rather have their phones in their hands for many reasons. With
the unknown dangers in schools all over America there is no real way of promising a 100 percent safe community. In worse case scenarios students are worried about not being able to contact their loved ones in a state of emergency. Junior Pippa Sauder says “What if there is a school emergency? How will I contact my family?” Others disagree with saying the amount of phone use in McCaskey is distracting and they aren’t able to finish work, Junior Eleni King Martin said “If other students could control themselves then I would love having my phone, but honestly when I look over and see the kid next to me on their phone I feel unmotivated.”

With mixed opinions, we asked the administration their opinions on the case. When Dr. Reese was asked about a possible phone ban, he shared his opinion that taking away students’ phones isn’t a way to move forward. He believes that phones overall are incredibly addicting, as is all technology, but as he says “If the school was to take phones away from students, we wouldn’t be able to teach them to be good digital citizens and prepare them for the future.” In this day in age all jobs rely on technology and by teaching students how to professionally use their devices, they can be prepared for global success. Although Dr. Reese doesn’t believe that ones should be locked up, he believes that teachers and staff should be able to tell students to put their phones away without backlash.
Overall students shouldn’t be worried about any future phone bans, but should be responsible with their phone use and shouldn’t be distracting peers. Students in McCaskey should always be intensive and listen in classes.
